Yuzima to Perform at Beatles Tribute Saturday

Hope you're all ready. Yuzima signed on in december to sing two songs at The Beatles Complete, an extravaganza dedicated to the Beatles where New York musicians sing all of the songs from the Beatles catalog. Yuzima will be singing a unique yet rousing version of "A Hard Days Night" and, song of all songs, "Hey Jude". Yuzima described the rehearsal with members of the band as "Over the Top" and "We might have raised John Lennon's spirit from the dead..." Yuzima will go on about 7pm so make sure you come out and bring your camera. It's definitely the thing to do this weekend.

Labeled “An Rock Opera Dedicated to Sound” by its creator and mastermind NYC indie-rocker Yuzima, Sound Opera: Project One has finally received a release date. On March 13^th2012. Sound Opera: Project One will hit the Internet and be available for download and streaming at a number of sources.

The grandest of all of Yuzima’s self-released projects, and follow up to the EP Cover Me described as “Yuzima channel(ing) his inner U2, while creating” Glasnost, The Opera clocks in at 20 minutes, equivalent to the length of a five song EP. But this is exactly what Yuzima wanted. “We don’t have enough bigness today” say’s the singer, “Everything is - just enough, I wanted to create a genuine art piece that would stand the test of time”, he continues...

Story behind the song: Mysterious Ways

I had not initially planned on recording Mysterious Ways. But after I finished recording the album, I had the urge to take it a step further. An EP is generally 3 to 6 songs Glasnost already had 7 songs. But with all that was going on in the world, from the turmoil in the Mideast, to the financial crisis's latest manifestation as the debt argument, I felt there was a little more to be said. And for the first time ever, I recorded a cover, although, I'm technically not calling it a cover, (I consider it a response). I recorded my very own version of, 1991 U2 Classic, Mysterious Ways and I made sure to put my special stamp on it. I got it in right under the wire and made it the unofficial 8th song of Glasnost. It's not available on Itunes, it's available separately on Bandcamp and Soundcloud. I've gotten an intense response back so far; the kind of response you want, when you take on U2. So thanks for reading about my new album and please help spread the word.

I think healing takes time is one of those obvious Axioms that should be a song, it just takes the right person to write it. Healing indeeds takes time and whether it's social or spiritual we need time to heal. This is what I mean by a theme album, these songs are not obvious but they each somehow relate to social and spiritual cleansing and openness, in turn, Glasnost.

This song is about the end of a relationship and being alone but deciding to go out and live or party anyway. Its also responds to Glasnost, in the bridge, where I say the large four walls are tumbling, referring to the albums theme and singing about the eastern front and praying to the eastern wall. But with all of that -- its about the freedom of having a good time, living life no matter what. (Oh and yes I have absolutely no problem going out (alone at night)... ha!)

I wrote this because I think there is a problem of a lack of true gatekeeping in what is labeled Experimental music. Music that isn't experimental is labeled so. Just because something sounds weird does't make it experimental. The simple fact that artists are using production templates (trends) to create their songs makes them pop songs but not experimental. There is a certain smugness to all of this that reeks of opportunism but not art.

I wrote this song about a hypothetical scenario inspired by a real life issue, Immigration, Specifically, the Arizona Immigration controversy. A lover kills for their beloved and is on the lam, hiding out in a Border Town torn away from the one they love. I was inspired by families who are separated because of immigration status and such. The song is not a political one. But I try to touch on the common experience that we all can identify with.

I don't usually write sex songs... ha. But guess what! I'm a very sexual person. Most of my songs deal with big subjects. But I think theres a lot of power in sexuality. And I plan on addressing it more in my music (get out of the way Prince). Fur is a thing about a feeling, one gets during a certain sexual position. And I'm going to leave it at that.

Glasnost in Russian means openness. After completing Its Wonderful, I knew I wanted to do another theme album in the vein of my second EP The Cosmonaut, almost in the same philosophical mode of that recording. Where that ep was more about one man and his quest to reach beyond the great beyond or human limits, my new ep would move the focus to movements of people. Thats why there are more tribal or church choir harmonies. In the beginning of the song I used effects to create the sound of marching to equate the marching of solders with people. We are an army of forward moving people bravely marching into the future.

December… 26th… 1991, in Moscow, the last of all Soviet flags in Russia was lowered, one of the last representations of the repression of the communist regime… Five years earlier Soviet Premier Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev brought forth the concept of Glasnost… a head of state’s, desperate attempt to bring life to a dieing communist regime. But instead of rejuvenating the Communists, the ideas of Glasnost sparked the consciousness of the Russian people and also citizens of many Soviet satellite states including East Germany. This is where the journey of Yuzima’s new ep Glasnost begins. The most recognizable symbol of communism was, and still for many, is the Berlin Wall.

When the wall came down in 1991 it represented a new step of human and social progress for Europe, Asia and in turn the world. Yuzima was only a small child when the wall came down but remembers the impact. And about 20 years later he felt compelled, not to go back in time, but to acknowledge the impact of that momentous event on modern time and that the world today is experiencing a great after-shock of Glasnost; America’s election of its first black president, the revolutions in the middle east and mans, in general, quest for more openness.

In addition to this social ground shift, Yuzima sites, seminal U2 album, Achtung Baby as a major influence on the sound of his ep. That is most apparent on the title song. Glasnost begins with the aggressive sound of military marching, emotionally powerful acoustic guitars and a modern take on the experimental pop that worked so well on hits from Achtung Baby. Anyone who has listened to Yuzima, knows that the acoustic guitar, reverb and quirky synths play a major role in his sound. Yuzima purposely went to a more organic rock sound for the first song. But he also brings in something new with the supportive touch of tribal group harmonies and the songs inspired lyrics. The second song, “Fur” is a straight-ahead rocker inspired by a naughty sex act (which Yuzima will not disclose). “Trapped in a Border Town”, originally, released earlier last year, was inspired by the immigration controversy; a lover murders for his beloved and is on the run. Yuzima has described the sound as “epic minimalism”. Over an electro beat and a The Killers-esque guitar, Yuzima tells the story of killing for love and the regret and paranoia that follows, as one goes on the lam. “Science Project” is a hard hitting experimental chant song where Yuzima calls out indie bands who misuse the idea of experimental pop. Rapping your song sounds like a science project try a little emotion. Imagine… that the Berlin Wall has just come down… what might some young folks want to do? Dance!!! “I go out (alone at night)” is a call to celebration. But even in the experimentally ethereal bridge of the song, he reminds us that “your last four walls are crumbling” and “my closed fist will crash the din”. Reminding us that even as we party the world is dramatically changing. Experimental mood record “Monsoon” reminds the listener that Yuzima is still an innovator at heart. The final song “healing (takes time)” tells us that as great as change is, it still takes a lot of time to heal the wounds of hate and oppression.

Glasnost follows Yuzima’s two eps and debut album Its Wonderful from 2010. But proves that just because an artist is diy or indie, it doesn’t have to lessen the scope, execution and daringness of the release.
